Learn about the work of our Integrated Members.
Elisabete Nascimento Gonçalves is an integrated member of CITAB, where she develops multidisciplinary research that combines biomedical science, experimental disease models and biotechnological approaches applied across different fields. She holds a degree in Biomedical Engineering and a PhD in Veterinary Sciences, with a specialization in Biomedical Sciences from UTAD, and has built a solid track record in preclinical research. With 24 scientific articles published and more than 70 conference communications, she has also contributed to student supervision, scientific outreach, and participation in several funded projects. She is currently a research fellow in a subproject of the Vine & Wine Portugal Mobilizing Agenda, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan, entitled BFF_Bioprocessed Fertilizers, where she applies her biological and experimental expertise to the study of eco-friendly fertilizers produced through composting and vermicomposting.
Soon, Elisabete will coordinate the project “EX_MEN – EXERCISE AS MEDICINE: Can Exercise Optimise Prostate Cancer Treatment?”, funded by FCT under the 2024 Exploratory Research Projects Call. EX_MEN addresses a clinically relevant question: can exercise safely mitigate the adverse effects of androgen deprivation therapy without compromising its antitumor efficacy in prostate cancer? The project will evaluate different exercise modalities and investigate metabolic, inflammatory and structural adaptations in the prostate and other tissues. It aims to generate knowledge with strong translational potential, contributing to safer and more effective therapeutic strategies. The approval of EX_MEN reflects Elisabete’s commitment to innovative research and reinforces CITAB’s mission to promote high-quality science with direct impact on human health and well-being.
