My scientific activity has focused on the valorisation of natural compounds, with particular emphasis on monoterpenes as agricultural and agri-food by-products with potential for biomedical applications and toxicologically safe profiles. The work developed has explored in depth the application of these compounds using biological models such as the zebrafish (Danio rerio). Through this model system, I have investigated the biological effects of these compounds, contributing to the understanding of the cellular, biochemical, and physiological mechanisms underlying their bioactivity. This approach not only enables the identification of robust biological profiles but also expands knowledge on the therapeutic potential and biofunctional properties of this class of natural compounds, aligning the research with the sustainability and innovation goals promoted by CITAB.
In this context, a significant part of my research has focused on the practical application of these compounds in the aquaculture sector, particularly as an effective and economically viable strategy to mitigate stress in fish during transport operations. By assessing the efficacy of monoterpenes as natural calming agents, I aim to develop alternative solutions to conventional pharmaceuticals, promoting more sustainable aquaculture practices with reduced environmental impact and improved animal welfare. These studies reinforce the valorisation of endogenous resources and the circular use of agricultural by-products, bringing research closer to the real needs of producers and the sustainable management of production systems. Overall, my scientific trajectory integrates environmental toxicology, biotechnology, and sustainability, contributing to the consolidation of innovative practices and the creation of knowledge applicable to biomedical, ecological, and agro-industrial contexts.
