"Farm Week" Brings Secondary School Students Closer to Animal Science and Technology

Ana Faustino (CITAB) welcomed three secondary school students for an immersive experience in the field of Animal Science and Technology through the "Farm Week" initiative, held as part of the Young People in Science During the Holidays 2026 programme, promoted by Ciência Viva.

Over the course of four days, the participants had the opportunity to experience the practical component of the Bachelor's degree in Animal Science and Technology, taking part in activities at Herdade da Mitra while interacting with academic staff, researchers and students from the Department of Animal Science

The programme was designed to provide a broad overview of the different areas of Animal Science, combining laboratory work with hands-on field activities. Throughout the week, the students explored topics such as comparative anatomy, animal nutrition, reproduction, parasitology, animal production and herd health management, while also visiting extensive cattle and sheep farming systems. Among the activities carried out were laboratory analyses, animal reproduction practices, milking sessions, calf feeding and animal health management procedures, allowing participants to gain first-hand insight into both professional practice and research in the field.

The initiative aimed to inspire interest in Animal Science while bringing students closer to the environment and the research being developed.
