Protecting Nature Means Protecting Our Future

On World Nature Conservation Day, it is important to recognize that nature conservation is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. As biodiversity loss, climate change, soil degradation, and the increasing occurrence of wildfires continue to threaten ecosystems worldwide, protecting natural resources has become essential to ensuring environmental sustainability, food security, and human well-being. 

Healthy ecosystems are the foundation of life on Earth. They regulate the climate, protect biodiversity, preserve soil fertility, safeguard water resources, and provide the many ecosystem services on which society depends. However, the growing pressure exerted by human activities on natural environments highlights the urgent need to adopt sustainable management practices and science-based solutions that support the conservation and restoration of these ecosystems. 

In this context, scientific research plays a fundamental role. At CITAB, several projects contribute to nature conservation through innovative approaches to ecosystem protection and restoration. Fire-ADAPT promotes Integrated Fire Management with the aim of strengthening wildfire prevention and protecting the ecosystem services provided by natural and cultural landscapes. REFLORESTA focuses on wildfire prevention and the restoration of affected areas through the use of innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence, hydraulic modelling, and remote sensing using satellites and drones, contributing to more resilient forest ecosystems. Meanwhile, Common Forest is dedicated to the study and promotion of native broadleaf forests with high levels of biodiversity that provide ecosystem goods and services.  

Nature conservation requires a collective effort involving researchers, policymakers, land managers, and society as a whole. Through the generation of scientific knowledge and the development of innovative solutions, research contributes to protecting biodiversity, restoring ecosystems, and building more resilient landscapes for future generations.
