APTA4shiga - Aptamers for blocking Escherichia coli shiga toxins

Coordinator: Carina Manuela Fernandes Almeida
UTAD/CITAB Coordinator: Maria João Miranda Pires

The APTA4shiga project aims to develop aptamers, single-stranded nucleic acids, as a therapeutic alternative for the treatment of infections caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Based on a selection methodology previously established by the research team, the identification and optimization of NAMs will be carried out, supported by in silico modeling approaches, in order to obtain aptamers with high affinity and neutralization capacity for Stx toxins. The efficacy of the selected compounds will subsequently be evaluated through in vitro and in vivo assays, using experimental infection models.
